Sharing science through comedy
I love to learn new ways to share my research, so when an opportunity came up to participate in a training program to learn how to be a science comedian, I was keen to dive in! The Future Science Talks program works with scientists to train them to give an engaging and entertaining talk about their research. Through the training we learnt comedy and presentation techniques, we developed some ideas into a script and then workshopped this with a comedian. It was a fun experience trying to figure out how to make seagrass jokes!
The program culminted in a public talk at a local pub, I don't usually get too nervous before talks these days, but this was the most nervous I've been in a while! The evening went really well though and everyone got a few laughs. It was gret to push myself out of my comfort zone to try something new, and the techniques I learnt will help me make my talks more engaging in the future.
You can see my talk here, some very Queensland jokes in there but you've got to play to your audience…!
